Honeybee Quilt - Day 3

Our teacher showed us how to paint and change the effect of the quilt. She started demonstrating on mine and then I took over. I love the way the water turned out, making the 'splash' stand out on the rocks. A great class to take.

Quilt Photography Class at Honeybee

My friend, Pat, and I are at Honeybee this week and my first class was with Esterita Austin and was fabulous. Here is my version of taking a photo and making it into a quilt piece.

I used a photo I took in Cabo San Lucas Mexico last month of the whole in the rock separating the bay from the Atlantic Ocean by the famous Lover's Beach. They are side-by-side, my photo and the interpration in quilt. It still needs to be painted - the glow of the sky in the hole and the waves crashing. All in all I am very pleased with the result and plan to try some other pictures when I get home.

This is the other quilt that I made for my sister, Joan. She wanted a country blue quilt. Now I have made quilts for each of my sisters. Maybe now I can make mine?

Pepper Dish

I am taking an on line class for the Pepper Dish quilt by Judy Niemeyer and today completed the center spikes. Since I am going to Honeybee this week I probably won't get much done the rest of the week.

I have chosen some greens and browns to do this quilt.

Honeybee Quilt Conference

Next week I am going with a good friend, Pat, to our annual quilt retreat at Honeybee in Jacksonville Florida. This year the theme is safari so the challenge quilt had to reflect a landscape scene. This is my entry - a hot air balloon going over the land of monkeys. Since we have a contest of decorating our rooms this year I also made a wild art bra to hang in the window.

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

I just got back from a wonderful cruise with my sisters through the Panama Canal, Long Beach to Miami. It was great and we had such a good time. We were taking our annual trip but also celebrating my younger sister's 60th birthday. This fall I was collecting signature blocks from all the family members to make in a quilt for her. The center medallion is appliqued and am showing one of the signature blocks from our older sister.

Some fishes came swimming up to my mail box this week. I love all the bright colors and they still look good after a week of being out of water. I hope they like the sewing machine and being made into some colorful placemats for my three E's for Christmas.

Sammy the Pumpkin Bear

Finished my third quilt yesterday, Sammy the pumpkin bear. It was the row swap quilt done this summer. Now to send to my grand-daughter as she was the one to name the bear. Although, I liked Pat's name of "jack", the granddaughter came first. Did some practicing of my machine quilting on this one and liked the way it came out. Practice does help.

Granite Falls School Autism Quilt

Today I finished the Autism Quilt for Granite Falls Elementary School and for my daughter, Tracey, a special ed teacher. She has been teaching special needs children for eleven years and I am very proud of her. Two special needs classes drew pictures on muslin last May and I put together the quilt and will donate it to the school. Last May I made two other quilts for their special autism day and they were raffled off. Raised almost $1500. for the school and their new musical playground for the students to enjoy.

I also made a personalized one for the
other special ed teacher that she wanted
for her classroom.

Sammy the Pumpkin Bear

This is my Sammy pumpkin round robin quilt made by some of the ladies in the Friendship Quilt Swap group.

I made the pumpkin from one of Sindy's Fat Cat designs, and Cindy did the border of hand appliqued candy corn. Then Karen did all the little nine-patch seminole patches around the final border.

My grand-daughter, Amber, named the bear Sammy and so it will go to her after I quilt it.

UFO finished

Finished my UFO from three years ago. A Fruit of the Spirit quilt made from the Egg Money Book by Eleanor Burns. My ladies from the Tuesday morning Bible study all had signed it when we studied Beth Moore's Fruits of the Spirit. I used it today as a tablecloth when the ladies where here for lunch.

My camera isn't working too well so the image is a bit more yellow. The background color is actually a light green batik.

Friends and Quilts

Pat and I got together for her birthday and we celebrated with our DHs as we all have birthdays during July and August. [Pat's the youngest] I made her a little friendship quilt to celebrate our long relationship. It says, "It takes a long time to grow an old friend", the gals are sitting under an oak tree.

Hannah's Birthday Quilt

My granddaughter Hannah will be five this week. She will be going to kindergarten and needed a sleeping quilt. She loves to eat fruits and veggies so I made her a quilt with her favorite foods. Often, she asks for carrots and ranch dressing for breakfast or a snack. Her favorite food is watermelon so I used that fabric for the back. Happy Birthday, Hannah.

Timothy's 10 Sports for his 10th Birthday Quilt

My grandson, Timothy, wanted a sports quilt for his new bedroom downstairs. He helped his father put in a new wood floor and nana painted the walls. I chose all the sports he loves to do, soccer, football, swimming, bowling, and some others he hasn't tried yet; baseball, hockey, surfing, and skiing. The backing is all the bowling fabric. The pattern was my version of the bullseye. I had made him one years ago and he likes that pattern. Happy Birthday Tim.
